Program Notes

When the Burning BRASs Band in Montréal came to me with a commission idea, I got excited—my first time ever writing for a jazz group, after years of playing jazz kit in high school! This chart was inspired by the past six months that I've spent in Vancouver, and how something's always going on in this city. Coming from a small town in both my childhood and my undergrad, this was a big shift for me, so I decided to lean into the vibe of a busy urban square, which really fits the street brass band aesthetic.

*The sousaphone part doubles the baritone sax part. If you have both parts covered, feel free to make the first 32 bars a solo, trade off on bass parts, etc.

**The drums part is written for a simple kit of bass, hi-hat and snare. Feel free to modify this to fit whatever gear you have.
