Program Notes

This fanfare was written to open the first concert of the 2023-2024 season for UBC Bands, directly preceding Flourish for Wind Band by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Flourish was lost after its 1939 premiere and was only uncovered in 1971 . The renaissance of this work felt like a satisfying parallel to the composition of this concert opener; in responding to Flourish fifty-two years later, I hope to rethink and recontextualize the original work, not upstaging but offering renewed perspective.
