When I was composing "Plateaux," I was facing a particularly challenging time in my personal life. I ultimately decided to turn around the lack of motivation I had and use it as an inspiration for this piece. I emulated the numbness and emptiness that I felt, by allowing for spaces of "loud silence" in both instruments.

"Plateaux" is composed in proportional notation. Extended techniques include "white noise" playing on hand-muted strings, circular bowing, and half-tone harmonics.
